Emily Thornton

Emily Thornton is a PhD student in the Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology at the University of Guelph and is currently completing her practicum placement at Sageview Health. She previously completed a practicum placement at Insight Psychology, where she conducted psychological and psychoeducational assessments with youth with concerns spanning low mood, anxiety, trauma, dysregulation, learning difficulties, and developmental delays. At Sageview Health, Emily conducts assessment and provides psychotherapy to children, adolescents, and families with diverse needs.
As a therapist, Emily draws upon multiple modalities to best meet the needs of her clients. These include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) integrated with principles from Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT). Working with individuals, parents, and families, Emily’s areas of focus include anxiety disorders, depressive disorders, emotion regulation difficulties, and behavioural difficulties. Regardless of modality or concern, Emily prioritizes creating a warm, safe, and supportive environment for her clients with an emphasis on promoting client strengths and resilience.
Emily has received several awards and distinctions, including research funding from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Counsel (Masters and Doctoral levels) and the Ontario Graduate Scholarship (Masters and Doctoral levels). She has co-authored several publications in peer-reviewed journals. Her dissertation research centres around the development of a strengths-based parenting intervention to support parent and child mental health and well-being.
