We are excited to offer a new group therapy for depression. It is available to all adults (18+) who are struggling with low mood difficulties. The group will be launched later this Fall.
What kind of therapy is it?
This is a 12-session group treatment using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to help individuals learn skills to manage low mood and feelings of depression. CBT is an evidence-based treatment used for depression in addition to other mental health problems. CBT is goal-oriented, focusing on current issues and concerns rather than concentrating on the past. The main goal is for clients (that’s you!) to learn specific skills to manage stressors more effectively in daily life, promoting balanced thinking based on an understanding of how your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours are related.
CBT does have a homework component which is important because, as you might expect, one session per week is not enough time to change behaviours that have been sticking around for a while. The best way to get the most out of the program is to complete homework throughout the week so that you have a chance to implement changes in your everyday life! Completing homework throughout the week will allow you to practice implementing changes in your daily life, and this is the best way to get the most out of the program.
Who is this group for?
- Does your mood often feel low, or do you often feel sad?
- Does your low mood/sadness last days or months on end?
- Have you lost interest or pleasure in activities that you used to enjoy (e.g., hobbies, pastimes, sports)?
- Do you experience a tiredness and a lack of energy such that even small tasks feel overwhelming?
- Do you experience feelings of worthlessness or excessive guilt?
If you are 18+ and answered “yes” to several of the above questions, this group is a good fit for you!
How does group therapy work?
This group is a warm and safe environment where you will be given the tools and support to face difficult challenges. In a group environment with the help of 2 therapists, you will learn strategies and skills to challenge your thinking patterns.
Groups are 90 minutes and occur weekly for 11 weeks, after which you will have a one-on-one session follow-up with one of the group therapists. Attendance is expected at each session to ensure you get the most out of the experience and all the new skills you’ll be learning!
There will be other people in the group who struggle with similar difficulties. While this might seem scary at first, most people find comfort in knowing they’re not alone because others can relate to their experiences. Groups provide an opportunity for members to learn tips and strategies from one another. You will have a built-in support system!
